“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”
-– B. Lester

"When the Swedish Academy awarded British writer Doris Lessing the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday, it praised her "skepticism, fire and visionary power."
The feminist writer and political radical (she was once a member of the Communist Party) quickly proved her skepticism about awards and money.

When told by reporters gathered outside her London home that she had won the prize worth $1.5 million, she replied, "I couldn't care less," according to the Associated Press.

"I can't say I'm overwhelmed with surprise," she told reporters. "I'm 88 years old and they can't give the Nobel to someone who's dead, so I think they were probably thinking they'd probably better give it to me now before I've popped off." Lessing, who will be 88 on Oct. 22, is the oldest writer to win the Nobel.

...

Beginning in the 1970s, Lessing became more involved with experimental writing and science fiction, which has dismayed some literary critics.

"This is pure political correctness," critic Harold Bloom told the AP. "Although Ms. Lessing at the beginning of her writing career had a few admirable qualities, I find her work for the past 15 years quite unreadable."

Actually it´s the science-fiction I find the readable stuff.

about the first book of the sf series

The Devil's supreme achievement is that nobody believes in him. There is a Deity, certainly, but one to be seen within the terms H.G. Wells suggested, that when man cries out his little gimme, gimme, gimme, it is as if a leveret snuggled up to a lion on a dark night. The Old Testament and other sacred literatures of the world may not, after all, be superseded rubbish. These are some of the old ideas Doris Lessing uses in her new and audacious history of the earth. It could be called a stars eye view of things, energetically encompassing millions of years of evolution from the time of lifes beginnings in the warm swamps to mans near-extinction in the Third - and last - World War, soon to be upon us. This war is Shammats (the Devils) victory, but also his defeat; optimism can be defined as the ability to believe that one percent of mankind may survive the wrath to come for a new start under the guidance of The Great Ones who bide Their Times. They watch, and wait, and monitor and adjust human development - employing, for instance, a judicious introduction of celestial genes in crucial epochs, or a supply of Messengers and Technicians whose task it is to warn and to instruct.

I take you have read this series, and are a big fan?
What are the names of the books you recommend?
How many in the series ( I like long books and series! Smile )
