“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

All My Aliens-Sci-Fi Soap Opera #80

Serial StoryBy Blue1Moon
AlienLove.com Editor

The O&N Mothership, much as expected by the Examinators, immediately initiated an all-out search for their missing agents. The decoy base was found almost immediately. The mistakenly kidnapped agents had been sent to the small expendable base, as soon as the kidnappers recognized that their plans had gone awry and they had snatched the wrong beings.

The rescue of her agents satisfied Glaboo for only a short time. The reports that came in regarding the facilities found on the small Examinator base, left Glaboo more worried than ever. Clearly, this was not a sophisticated enough of a set-up for the Examinators to have used it to pulled off the grab. She contacted Gartan’s home planet, only to find that he had not returned there as instructed. Sending off an urgent message to O&N’s heirarchy, she asked for help...

“Now,” Glaboo commented to one of her assistants, “time to find the traitor or traitors on this ship who were in contact with Gartan and/or the Examinators to give them Barbara and Suli’s return schedule. It had not been decided before he was banished. The offending agents will be stripped of membership in O&N, interrogated, and handed over to O&N’s Internal Investigations Department for prosecution. Today! This will not wait!”

************

There were glad greetings and much excitement as everyone got together to honor Barbara and Suli’s achievements. The two recently returned agents spent a couple hours regaling the group with their experiences onboard the mothership. The party was held at Dave’s house – not much more than a stone’s throw from Barbara’s place. He had outdone himself, offering two laden tables of food, that all looked as good as it tasted. (He had spent almost the entire time Barbara was away in training - cooking, to welcome her back – Suli too, of course.)

Tilly and Martha were engaged in an intense conversation with Barbara and Suli about what had happened with Gartan, so Dave took this time to separate Bard from the group. He suggested that they take Silver and Shadow for a walk. Bard took one look at his friend’s worried face and agreed.

Barely waiting for the door to close behind them, Dave burst out, “So, what really happened? I know the Examinators have been spotted on Earth. When I contacted a friend on the O&N mothership, I heard two agents heading to Iceland to check it out, disappeared. Not coincidentally, I think, at the very time Barbara and Suli were supposed to have been traveling. Had it not been for that emergency schedule change, we’d be looking for them right now! I’m worried. What’s going on? I thought the Examinators were pretty much smashed after their last attempt, and wouldn’t dare show their faces near this system again.”

Bard sighed and kept walking, giving Silver a pat. There was no way to hide the danger, and it would be foolish to do so. “Well, bad news sure travels fast! Yes, the Examinators tried to kidnap Barbara and Suli – we believe that Barbara was the primary target. The good news is that the agents taken in their place have been retrieved, not much worse for the wear. A small base has been destroyed, but Glaboo is certain there must be another, larger one close by. Clearly their interest in Earth is far more compelling that we had anticipated.”

Dave only moaned, his worst fears, and more, having been confirmed by Bard. The two walked on in relative silence. Shadow rubbed against Dave, trying to show his support, but almost knocked him down in the process. That brought a brief grin to his friend’s face.

Bard took a few minutes, before returning to the party, to contact Glaboo and get updated on any new developments. His face was grim when he finished. He filled Dave in, and then admitted that they were going to have to tell the rest of the group, tonight.

************

At the 1,000 World Federation O&N Headquarters, activity erupted when Glaboo’s message arrived and the news spread. There was much consternation, and immediate consequences. The Eldestan, already searching known space for Examinator bases, were called in to advise. Those closest, and most able to break off current activities, were already heading to Earth’s vicinity. They were to meet on the O&N mothership, by which time it was hoped Bard and Glaboo would have further details.
