“Look,” said Bird, “I know that Jonglire has already joined Bard on Earth. I am quite aware that there is a huge vicinity of space to be searched, but I have a feeling that Bard is going to need me. The intuition is very strong, I cannot in good conscience ignore it.”
Glaboo nodded, pretty much willing to accept whatever help any of the Eldestan saw fit to offer, and was naturally sympathetic to her aunt’s desire to help Bard – he was after all, her father. In fact, Glaboo offered to join her – but Bird said that the O&N mothership would need Glaboo’s leadership. Though disappointed, Glaboo could hardly argue.
“I still think that your many talents would be much more useful in our search,” Song commented “but I will not go against your obvious strong feelings.” The other two Eldestan present seemed unhappy, but held their silence...
“Thank you for your support Song, do stay in touch and keep me updated. It’s been real nice meeting you, Glaboo, hopefully there will be more time to get to know each other after we have taken care of this matter. Well then, if there are no further objections, I’ll be off.” Within moments Bird faded.
Barbara’s parents were naturally thrilled about the opportunity to have Al visit for a few weeks - they had been pushing for this for more than a year. Thankfully, the dogs and Bard’s small horse were looked upon as welcome additions.
With that settled, Barbara felt at least a modicum of relief. Dave and Barbara would make the drive to Maine with Al, Peanut, and Shadow in the morning, shortly after Al arrived. Bard would meet them there with Silver. It was strongly suggested by Grrphh, with the whole group agreeing, that Barbara should stay at least a few days in Maine as well, allowing some time for more details to come in, and some preparations to be made.
“That would actually be great – no matter how excited he is, or how much he says he wants to go, I’m sure Al will feel a whole lot better if I stay a few days too,” Barbara enthusiastically agreed.
Dave would also stay in Maine, though he and Bard would rent a small cabin. Dave wasn’t sure either he or Barbara was up for the “meet the relatives” thing quite yet, or if they ever would be.
With the next few days settled, Barbara wanted to know more about the “protections” to be set in place, and exactly what was going on – she didn’t want to end up remaining permanently in hiding, besides it was hard not feel anxious when one didn’t really know what was happening. With that question, the group settled down to discuss options.
Jonglire had remained silent, except for offering to accompany the group to Maine. In spite of Jonglire’s obvious frustration, Bard was uncharacteristically insistent that he stay here. Bard claimed that his friend would be much more useful setting up protections here and laying a trap in the event of another kidnapping attempt. Jonglire was clearly annoyed, but accepted Bard’s “suggestion”, or at least indicated that he had.
“I’m supposed to be “glad” that you were assigned as my partner?” Gartan asked in rage. “You’re damn lucky I don’t just bite your head off right now, and end this insanity!”
Peliix backed away from Gartan’s rage slightly, but responded, “Now really, Gartan, do you think that would be wise? We could always send another in your place, there are other non-Examinator-born among us – you really just aren’t that important! Shall we put it to the test? Your threats have been recorded, shall I take them to ‘The Powers That Be’?”
Gartan hesitated, then growled, “Shut up – we got a mission. Let’s do it.”
Peliix only smiled strangely in response, increasing Gartan’s annoyance, but also giving him pause. Perhaps he could manage to work with the ‘rat thing’ – there were worse possibilities, no doubt.
Within a few hours, they were ready to depart – Gartan doing his best to keep his temper in control.
Bird had made a few stops before heading to Earth, there were a number of things she wanted to check out. Some were rumors she’d heard, she also wanted to track back Jonglire’s recent activities, and speak to some colleagues whose opinion she valued. Although she accomplished these tasks with lightning speed, causing some consternation at her apparent rudeness, she did not arrive before Bard had left to make arrangements in Maine.
As a result, it was Jonglire who greeted her, with way too much warmth. Not wanting to tip her hand until she had spoken to her brother, Bird did her best to respond as Jonglire clearly expected.
