“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Science Fiction: All My Aliens - Sci-Fi Soap Opera #92

Serial StoryBy Blue1Moon
AlienLove.com Editor

Bird and Song were much relieved to see reinforcements arrive in the form of more Eldestan, and Glaboo with her agents. The group conferred a few moments, exchanging information, then made a decision. Joining their energies, the Eldestan wrapped both Bard and Jonglire in the flow and transported them off Earth, to a place where the potential by-products of their battle would cause less harm.

Bard was aware of the arrival of more of his species, and that he was being bound along with Jonglire and moved off-planet. While it was a relief, his thoughts flashed to Barbara, suddenly sorry he had told no one of her whereabouts. Now would be a perfect time for the Examinators to make another grab for her, but there wasn’t much he could do about it at the moment...

Bard did console himself with the fact that he had had the forethought to place a timed message within Dave’s mind before sending him off to find Bird. In another 24 hours or so, Dave would suddenly ‘know’ where Barbara was. He hoped one of them was there in time to help her.

************

Dave was fit to be tied. He became so anxious about both Barbara and Bard when Grrphh explained the situation, that he paced and mumbled under his breath until he began driving the others to distraction. Martha, who with John, posed as Tilly and Suli’s grandparents, finally nudged her mate. John nodded, got up and laid a hand on Dave shoulders, stopping his momentum, then guided him outside.

Before they got out of the breezeway, Dave began expressing his frustration, “I don’t know what to do, John! I am so worried about both of them – yet, I have no idea where Barbara is, and my only way to get to Bard is to drive. I know darn well, whatever is going to happen, will be done and over with before I get close. I need to do something!”

John listened quietly for a few minutes more as Dave repeated his worries. Finally speaking he said, “Dave, since you don’t know where Barbara is, and you can’t get to Bard in time, obviously, there is nothing you can do about either of those situations. So why don’t we focus on something more constructive?”

“Glaboo said that Gartan’s ship was spotted in the vicinity not long ago, but disappeared before they could apprehend it. Wanna bet they’ll pick now to make a run for Earth? Shall we construct a monitoring device – it will only cover this quadrant of the planet – but that’s better than nothing.”

For a moment Dave was even more stressed, then the idea of building something to help out quickly took hold of his thoughts, as John had expected. The two headed to the woodworking business, that was O&N’s front in this region, after rounding up some help among the other agents.

************

Peliix stealthily maneuvered the ship out of the shadow of the moon after getting the ‘maybe’ all-clear from Gartan, and made a rapid dive toward Earth. They were much more visible this way - but only very briefly, it could only be hoped that no one noticed.

To their relief, they entered Earth’s atmosphere without challenge. Gartan activated the scans to look for the tracers that had been planted. Their ship circled the Earth several times at low-altitude, before picking up the signal they had hoped for. They landed in a thinly settled area, not far from where their sensors indicated their target’s position.

************

For Barbara and her family things had been quiet since Bard left, though Barbara remained somewhat anxious, still not knowing what had caused his precipitous departure mid-meal.

Al was excited and wanted to explore the region more, his new goal was to walk all the way around the lake. Barbara agreed, thinking it might help take her mind off why they were here, and packed a few snacks in Al’s backpack. He was proud to be carrying their supplies. Shadow and Peanut accompanied them, while Silver remained with Barbara’s parents to keep an eye on the house, and await Bard’s return.

Grandpa Joe and Amy knew something was wrong a couple hours later when Silver began neighing. Moments later, Peanut was outside barking and charging at the doors. Barbara’s father loaded up a shotgun he found on a rack in the closet. Amy was by his side when he opened the door to follow the animals to his daughter and her son. It was time, Joe decided, to find out what was going on!

Silver raced ahead, with Peanut following more slowly leading Al’s grandparents, anxiously waiting for them when they fell behind.
