The number of Eldestan surrounding the battle between Bard and Jonglire had swelled as more help was called in. When thirteen were present, Bird made an attempt to contact her brother. There was much difficulty, and when she failed, a number of the others tried – Bard must be told to let loose of Jonglire. The two must be separated, because to do what must be done while the two were engaged was unthinkable. More than bad enough as it was.
“Well, what do we do with them?” Joe asked his daughter. “Should we call the state police, the feds, or the newspapers? Sure gonna make a splash, I never saw anything like these two before! And one of them still alive, to boot!” ...
Shadow barked sharply, even Amy and Joe recognizing it as a resounding, ‘no’. Amy seemed surprised for a moment then looked to Barbara. Her daughter seemed focused on Shadow and Silver for the moment. But Al wasn’t silent.
“Oh no, Grandpa Joe! We can’t do none of that stuff! Griff and Bard and everybody would be so mad! It would be like a big disaster or something. Shadow and Silver will know what to do till Bard gets back, they’re talking to Mom now.”
Joe and Amy looked at Al in surprise, but didn’t respond. They were amazed at their grandson’s easy acceptance of and knowledge about what was going on. It did seem that Barbara was ‘talking’ to the animals, and she had warned them that the animals were not what they seemed.
Dave and John were not able to get their equipment set up in time to observe Gartan’s ship entering Earth’s atmosphere, however they were able to ascertain it’s current position. It was not that far – perhaps 40 or 50 miles away by auto. Dave had an increasingly sinking feeling that this was where Bard had stashed Barbara and Al. He was in his car, along with John and Grrphh in moments. Luckily there was little traffic on the roads, and no Earth police noticed their speedy passage.
As they got closer, the delayed memory that Bard had placed in Dave’s mind, became clear. He knew exactly where Barbara was now, and clearly the Examinator agents had found her, or were about to. He could not drive fast enough and cursed, under his breath, the slowness of Earth’s transportation methods. Grrphh and John did not try to engage him in conversation, they could half-hear his mumbled rantings, and that was more than enough to know what had happened.
Bird tried again to reach her brother. This time imaging Barbara to him and the fact that an Examinator ship had landed on Earth, and was assumed to be searching for her. When Bird sent the knowledge of exactly where they had set down, she had Bard’s attention. He was finally made to understand that enough other Eldestan were present and ready to handle the situation.
Still it was a struggle to disengage, Jonglire was also aware of the others present, and knew their difficulty. As long as his energies were so entwined with Bard’s, it was unlikely they would risk intervention.
After what seemed an eternity, there was a flash of light and Bard was suddenly hurtling away. The thirteen observing Eldestan immediately enclosed Jonglire within a ring of energy. His knowledge and most of his intellectual abilities were excised - a literal lobotomy of his power. He became like a child, no longer a threat to anyone. A wave of sadness passed through the thirteen, none had ever participated in such a thing previously, and none had ever wanted to. It had been many, many hundreds of years since this had last been required.
The oldest among them, quietly agreed to shepherd Jonglire back to their home planet. Jonglire’s adventures in the future would be limited to caring for food plants. More important now was to find out where he had been during his long absence and how he had gained such power, not to mention what had caused him to go renegade in the first place.
It was feared that his defection involved collusion with the Examinators. They needed to know exactly how far Jonglire had fallen, and what knowledge had been betrayed.
