“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

All My Aliens - Sci-Fi Soap Opera #95

Serial StoryBy Blue1Moon
AlienLove.com Editor

“Mom, Dad,” Barbara began, once finished listening to Shadow and Silver, “Al is right, we can not report this to anyone. I was hoping that Bard would arrive to clean things up, but Silver is very worried about him. Apparently someone went rogue, a very dangerous someone, with whom Bard has his hands more than full. I think our only option for the moment, is to bury Gartan and keep the little one under guard. I wonder where their ship is? It would not be good if one of the other vacationers accidentally come upon it.”

As Grandpa Joe began to tell his daughter that he would head back to the house for shovels, a clod of dirt hit him in the face – Shadow and Peanut had already begun to dig. That brought a brief smile to his face, while Al laughed outright, asking, “Hey Mom, can I talk to the other one? It doesn’t look too dangerous!” ...

“Believe it or not, I got a name!” the captured Examinator agent announced, talking fast in the hopes that he would get a chance to be heard. “It’s Peliix! You don’t have to worry about our ship, no one will see it, not unless they happen to walk right into it. It’s in invisi-mode. See, I'm willing to cooperate, please help me! I really don’t want to go back! The Examinators are not exactly pleasant, a big mistake on my part, I’ll tell you that. And umm…if we are going to be friends you should know that the Examinators’ chip can not only take me out, it is also a locator/listening device…”

With that comment, Peliix screamed, and passed out.

The small alien was counting on his Examinator masters keeping him alive anyway, figuring he was playing triple agent for the money offered. It wasn’t like his chip would have gotten by the agents here anyway, at least not for long.

Barbara conferred once more with Shadow and Silver. In the end, the unconscious Peliix was tied up in Joe’s shirt and strapped onto Silver’s back. The collar with the tracer, that Peanut had been wearing, was removed and thrown in the make-shift sack with the alien. Joe and Silver would be returning to the house, as shovels were going to be needed despite Shadow and Peanut’s worthy efforts, and something would have to be done with the alien. Clearly, it would not be wise for him to be kept in the vicinity of Barbara and Al, at least not while he could still be tracked.

************

Dave was in a frenzied state, by the time they pulled up at the house where Barbara was supposed to be staying. He raced inside, and found to his great dismay, that no one was around. He spent a few minutes calling out to Barbara and Al from around the property, then joined back up with John and Grrphh who had been searching the house more closely. No sign of a struggle or any problems was found, but neither were there any clues as to where the occupants had gone.

It was quickly determined that the only other course was to find the Examinator ship, perhaps something could be learned there. Grrphh and John were already back in the car hoping to get closer before striking out on foot, when Dave heard Silver’s neigh. Relief swept over him, he knew instantly that while his friend was worried, and help was needed, events were not yet disastrous. Although mentally much closer to Shadow, the dog-like animal from Dave’s home-planet had shut his partner out when Bard separated them. It was hard on both, but Bard had impressed upon Shadow the necessity for Barbara’s safety. As a result, Dave got little more than vague worry from Shadow.

Grandpa Joe and Silver were soon in view, and quickly updated the others. John, having the Earth-form of a very elderly man and liking to play the part to the hilt whenever possible, was left to take charge of Peliix - no running through the woods for him. Grrphh destroyed Peanut’s collar before grabbing a shovel, then with Dave, followed Silver and Joe to join his wife, daughter and grandson.

************

Bard had been flung far from the action, once he was finally able to separate from Jonglire. There was nothing more he could do there, and he knew with a sinking of heart, the significance of thirteen of his race waiting to handle his old friend. A part of him felt that he should be the one to take Jonglire home, but another part knew he couldn’t bear it.

He had to keep from thinking about that now, time enough later. Barbara and her family should never have been left alone for so long. However, having spent most of his energy already in the battle, he was not able to pass as quickly back to Earth as he might have liked.

************

Barbara stood guard tensely, as Shadow and Peanut dug, Joe had left his gun with her, and she did know how to use it. Al seemed remarkably unconcerned, and in fact, was now bored. He had looked over the dead alien several times. Gartan was indeed amazing, but the novelty had worn off, so for the second time he asked, “Mom, can I see if I can find their ship? I never saw nothing invisible before, oh well …umm… I guess I won’t see it now either, but you know what I mean! It’d be like the ultimate ‘hide and seek’, don’t you think? Please, Mom, I don’t think there’s anyone dangerous around anymore. We got the bad guys already, didn’t we!”
