Immediately after Jonglire’s permanent pacification, Glaboo returned to the O&N Mothership, leaving the Eldestan to deal with the results, and their grief privately. She did not spend long there. One of her assistants was anxiously awaiting her return, informing the O&N Chief that the Examinators seemed to be throwing all caution to the wind. A message had gone out, apparently to every agent they had left on Earth, to converge on the Northeast section of the North American continent, as soon as possible. There had been little attempt at camouflaging these directives, which went out on multiple communication channels – some within ranges that might possibly be picked up by Earth authorities and/or citizens. The Examinators were obviously desperate to gain their prize – Barbara.
Glaboo immediately rounded up her most trusted agents, as much equipment as they could manage, and headed to Earth...
Barbara was saved from having to respond to Al’s question about all the “bad guys” being caught, when her father and alien friends arrived. Her relief upon seeing Dave was immense, but nothing compared to his outright joy at seeing, for himself, that Barbara and Al were safe. They practically flew into each other’s arms. Despite all the chaos going on, Amy noticed and smiled to herself at her daughter’s obvious feelings for this man. Moments later it dawned on her that Dave might be an alien being! She was not sure how she felt about that, but was quickly distracted by the desire to know more about what was happening and how much danger they were in.
Grrphh immediately went to inspect Gartan’s lifeless body, then pulled it into the shallow pit that Shadow and Peanut had already dug. Using a small device taken from one of his many pockets, Grrphh reduced the Examinator’s body to little more than ash. The shovels were used to fill in the hole, though there was little left to be seen or found by anyone.
Shadow heard it first, and set up a howling – moments later a helicopter appeared over their heads, then another. Grrphh shouted and the group headed to the minimal shelter of the trees, while the helicopters landed.
Al, to his great delight, ran headlong into Gartan’s ship, amazed to be able to feel something he could not see. He yelled to the others, “I found it! I found it! Come see! Boy, this is great – a real spaceship and invisible, too!”
After a brief discussion and a couple of nods, it was decided that the group would make their stand here. Things were not looking good – Joe had reloaded the shotgun and Dave and Grrphh had a few surprises up their sleeves, but it was unlikely to compare with the fire-power the Examinator agents had brought with them.
Glaboo and her agents arrived at the lake house to find John and the still-living Examinator agent, Peliix. John filled Glaboo in quickly - up to the point of Dave and Grrphh following Silver and Joe back to the scene of action. One of the O&N Chief’s agents had medical training and had brought his equipment. He immediately vaporized the chip implanted in Peliix, with no detriment to it’s host.
Peliix woke up moments later smiling, “Hey, thanks! I’m finally free of them! You really don’t know how much I appreciate it, how can I repay you?”
Glaboo shook her head and shrugged, then said, “Stay here and out of trouble. We’ll talk later about repaying your debt.”
One the agents still outside the house came rushing in, “Two helicopters just went over, headed in the direction John indicated Barbara and the others were waiting – my guess is that they are piloted by Examinator agents, but Earth authorities would be almost as bad.”
There was no further discussion – a fix had been gotten on the ship that brought Gartan and Peliix to Earth, Glaboo and her agents dematerialized.
Even as Glaboo and the other O&N agents went to help Barbara and her family, more and more Examinators were arriving in the vicinity. They came in small planes and cars – a couple were even approaching via motor boat across the lake.
The situation was not good, an all-out battle would be impossible to hide from Earth authorities. Their potential arrival could only add to the problems. Clearly, the Examinators no longer cared about hiding their presence on Earth, if they could obtain their “prize”.
The rather absurd reality was that Barbara knew nothing more than any other new O&N agent. She was just the first accepted from Earth, and had had only one round of training thus far. But the fact that the usual protocols had been cast aside in her case, as Earth was not yet even being considered for membership in the 1,000 World Federation, had convinced the Examinators that Barbara must have some very special power or knowledge.
