The horses reared upon reaching the recently disturbed earth beside the lake. The men riding them could see that something had gone on here, but were not sure why their mounts were so upset. When the horses refused to calm, they rode them back in the direction they had come and tied them up far enough away from the disturbance that they no longer seemed nervous. The two men then began walking back.
Their arrival had not gone unnoticed, Glaboo knew that they could not be allowed to discover more... so she reluctantly sent off several of the recently arrived reinforcements to follow them. The humans did not get far from their horses before the O&N agents, not all having used Quick Morph and thus not looking human, came upon them. Their shock at finding aliens approaching them was intense – one yelled in fear, they both tried to run, but collapsed on the beach, unconscious, within a few steps...
The O&N agents who had tranquilized them, looked them over, then gently lifted the two onto the backs of their now-placid horses. Silver had joined the agents handling these men, and fortunately had a very calming effect on the Earth animals, allowing them to be led to their owners. Silver made clear to the horses that they should follow, which they did without fear. The group returned with the captives to the clearing where Glaboo, Barbara and the rest waited, for guidance on what was to be done with them.
After little discussion, it was decided that the memory-erasing dust would have to be used – something avoided as much as possible, as it was not always permanent. The men and their horses were lead a couple miles further around the lake and retied, the men laid back upon the Earth. It would be many hours yet before they awakened, by which time it was hoped they would have the area cleaned up, so that there would be nothing further for them to find. The memory dust was not precise in exactly how much time it erased – but between six and twelve hours was expected, enough for their purposes. It would still leave the men with unexplained missing hours from their lives - often resulting in attempts to retrieve the memories. Unfortunate, but unavoidable.
The remaining Examinator agents had been transported off Earth, for their brief stay on the O&N mothership. One of Glaboo’s assistants agreed to pilot Gartan’s ship, and took off while others were dealing with the men who had been curious enough to check things out for themselves. There still remained the trench and other damage in the vicinity of the battle to be cleaned up – this could not be so easily accomplished, at least not quickly.
As discussions were being held on how to proceed, Bard finally appeared. He was welcomed very enthusiastically, but was clearly still weak. It was a relief for all to see him safe, his presence always seemed to bring out the best in everyone. Glaboo and Barbara both hugged him, the other agents were more restrained, but no less happy.
Al ran up and asked, “Where’ve you been Bard? Boy we sure needed help for a while there, but luckily everything worked out okay. I got to go into an invisible spaceship! Can you believe it? And I’m a hero now too!”
Bard seemed to perk up a bit and couldn’t help but laugh, “I’m sure you are young man, and that everyone appreciates your invaluable help! You will have to tell me all about it later, but for now I think I need to talk to Glaboo, your mother and a few others, okay?”
Al responded, “Oh sure, I know there’s still a mess to clean up, already some guys came looking. Besides, it’s a long story – so we can talk about it later, no problem!”
Taking Glaboo, Dave and Barbara aside, Bard quickly caught up on the events he had been absent for. It wasn’t nearly as bad as he had feared, but it had certainly come close to disaster. He explained that he did not have the energy for a real fix here, and at best he might be able to temporarily camouflage the area, and perhaps create an energy around it that would deter or disorient anyone who tried to get too close. It was not the best solution, for there were a number of ways it could be circumvented, but it might have to do for now. The others nodded, glad for his help and consult – it was more than they could manage. Then Bard's face lit up, unexpectedly, in delight.
“Ah, good news - my sister, Bird, is near – she should be arriving shortly.”
The reunion was pleasant, Bird was so happy to see for herself that her brother was okay. They did not mention he whom had brought them all to this place – Jonglire – for the time being, it was still too painful to discuss. He had been friend, almost brother to them for almost all of their very long lives.
Bird, however, brought news that was not very welcome. More Examinator agents were thought to be heading to this area, it was not clear how soon they would arrive.
