“Hey!” Peliix cried out, “Stop that! You got me, okay? I’m awake, just please stop tickling me! “
Al grabbed hold of the small alien around the waist and called out, “He’s awake, Grrphh, what do I do with him now?” Then turning to look at the alien, said, “Now, don’t you try nothing funny, you! It’s my job to watch you, and not let you get in any trouble, you hear me?”
Peliix laughed, “Don’t worry, I’m not gonna run away or nothing, the Examinators would just catch me, then I’d sure be sorry. But please don’t squeeze me so hard!”
“Oh sorry,” Al replied, “I just wanted to do a good job. Are you dangerous?”
Grrphh arrived in time to answer, “Well not so much dangerous, Al, but definitely mischievous at the very least. But I think this one has had his fill of trouble for a while. Have you not, small one?”
The conversation was interrupted by a loud, deeply resonating ‘boom’ - a sound that felt like it had no rightful place on Earth...
Even experienced O&N agents were left shivering, though they knew it for part of the work Bard was doing - in fact the sound usually accompanied the finishing of a clean up like this. How it might impact the humans across the lake could only be guessed, but surely their fear would increase again, and the authorities would be once more brought in.
So it was not unexpected to most, when a few minutes later, Bard, Bird and Glaboo re-joined the group. They looked, if possible, even more exhausted than before, but appeared to be satisfied with their work.
Leaving Peliix once again in Al's "care," Grrphh left to speak to Bard and his superior, Glaboo. Al set Peliix on the ground, first asking if he was going to be good, and then whether Peliix knew what that awful sound had been. The small alien tried to appear helpful and knowledgeable, but in reality had little information to offer.
Meanwhile, Grrphh asked politely how things had gone with the clean-up, then explained their current situation. All concurred that it would not be advisable to return to the lakeside house at this point – neither could they remain where they were. The Memory Dust would soon be wearing off on the two men who had been so curious as to try to check things out themselves. With a large block of time obviously missing from their lives, it was more likely than ever that they would investigate further.
Grrphh and Bard spoke quietly, then Bard closed his eyes and rested his back against a tree. Grrphh rose and sought out Barbara, taking her aside from her mother and father.
“Look Barbara,” he began, “clearly Bard, Glaboo, Bird, and for that matter, all of us, are exhausted. We cannot safely stay in this place any longer.”
Barbara nodded in agreement. The whole group looked a sorry lot, without a doubt. Dave was all but unconscious, and Barbara worried about her parents, they weren’t exactly young anymore.
“There is only one solution we have been able to come up with,” Grrphh continued, watching carefully for her reaction. “We are going to have to transport to the O&N mothership for a day or so. Do you think your parents and Al can handle it? We are not comfortable leaving them behind...”
Barbara looked shaken for a moment as she considered it. While she couldn’t leave her son or her parents to the mercy of the authorities, possibly the press, not to mention the Examinators, she wasn’t happy at all about getting them any more involved than they already were. She sighed with resignation, realizing that there were probably few other options.
She consoled herself with the fact that Al would be absolutely thrilled at the thought of visiting a ship that was out in space, she only hoped O&N wouldn’t try to erase his memories of these experiences. Barbara found she could not quite approve of doing this to her fellow humans – a part of her wanted everyone to know, though she realized the necessities of appropriate timing for the greatest good. She could only wonder how her parents might react to this newest challenge.
Shadow had left Dave’s side only a short while before. He had spent some time reassuring himself that his partner was okay. The dog-like alien had joined Silver in patrolling the area. Their sudden insistent alert brought almost everyone to their feet.
