“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Defining Social Responsibility: I Read The News Today .... Oh Boy!

OpinionBy Bob Skold
LibertyUnion Candidate for Governor of Vermont

Today’s Headlines: North Korea; Nuclear Tension; Iran Warns Europe It May Get Hurt For Backing Israel; White House Rules Out Proposals To End Iraq War; Priest Denies Sexual Relationship With Foley; Wal-Mart To Rally Employees’ Voting Power; Republicans Blame Democrats; Democrats Blame Republicans.

Social Responsibility! ... What the hell does it mean?

When I was a kid the word "socialist" and "communist" were kind of one in the same, or so I was taught. Politically, people in general confuse the words/terms "social" with the term "those dam communists". Well, except for "Social Security".

I think Social Security is a good thing or at least it's intent was ... providing the Republicans and Democrats don't run the financials into the ground and divert the money that people paid into the program for some self-righteous purposes, like financing war. Both those political parties love to spend, spend, spend ... our tax dollars. As a matter of fact they do it relentlessly, so much in fact, that our great country is so far in debt that .... well, let's leave that for another story.

And I remember Grandma inviting everyone over to her house for a "social". All the relatives would gather at Grammies and have dinner, play cards, etc., etc...

And I took a cruise once and joined in all the social activities .... now that was fun.

So, all the social events and things I've ever done have been a positive experience. Good in fact.

So why are social programs such a bad idea? Why is it that people never seem to warm up to the idea of socialized programs run by our government. After all, is it not "government, by the people and for the people"? That sounds like socialistic terms to me.

It's our tax dollars that are being spent, right? Should we not have some say in how it gets spent?

Most of it gets spent without our direct approval, on many things that most Americans don't really want. I mean , I hate seeing my tax dollars going to programs like weapons. I don't think we (our government) should be in the weapons business. You know the US supplies most of the world with weapons, and our weapons budget is many times greater than any other country on the planet. Is that really the only way to bring about peaceful solutions on the earth?

To me, it's kind of like saying "if don't like us, we're going to beat you up until you do". I've never made a lasting friendship like that. But I have made lasting friendships through lending a hand.

... and I don't like the idea of paying off trillions in interest loans to so many countries. I find this type of spending to be irresponsible. What a lesson our government is teaching it's people! Spend on credit ... it's no wonder the debt of our societies debt is so high. Not only are 90% of the people in debt to Visa and Mastercard ... but our government is so far in debt that our great grandchildren will be paying it off. That just doesn't seem right to me.

The use of tax dollars going to kill other people just doesn't sound like it's "for the people" either.

I guess examples like this could go on and on ... but let's think about something else. Let's think some more about the definition of the term Social. According to Dictionary.com:

so-cial [soh-shuhl] :

1. pertaining to, devoted to, or characterized by friendly companionship or relations: a social club.
2. seeking or enjoying the companionship of others; friendly; sociable; gregarious.
3. of, pertaining to, connected with, or suited to polite or fashionable society: a social event.
4. living or disposed to live in companionship with others or in a community, rather than in isolation: People are social beings.

These sound like pretty friendly terms and ideals to me. Can you imagine a society in which the goal or purpose is for the betterment of life, for every child, woman and man in the country, or even on the planet that matter?

Yeah, you can say that this is an unrealistic goal, but what a goal to work toward! Sounds so much nicer than bomb building, covert operations, spying, torturing and all the other things the US has been trying to sell for the last who knows how long.

I can't understand why the US Government is so "hung up" on selling war and bombs. Couldn't we do better? Couldn't we be selling corn, or solar panels, or anything else to the world?

I think we can! I think peace in the world and on this planet can be reached ... and it doesn't take killing everyone that doesn't agree with us to achieve it! Look at the mess Iraq is in, look back at Vietnam ... I mean, does war ever solve anything? I don't think so, and when you dig down into peoples minds and the hearts of people - and I mean people from anywhere - they don't want it either ... yet, Governments and Countries keep on warring ... Why?

I have come to the conclusion that it is in the best interest of our government and the Political Parties that form it, to continue killing their own people.

Yep, Republicans and Democrats alike enjoy making those huge profits for those that put them in office. By that I mean the corporations and lobbyists that work so hard to "own your local Congressmen - Representitives, Senators, and Governors"! I think our country is currently run by a bunch of thugs ... No really. Listen up!

I think that’s what we're dealing with - thugs ... just like any thug on the street corner, except they are in a higher position and protected by their promises of doing something for the people. And we allow this, year after year at election time.

But, there is one major difference in America ... we, the people, can clean it (this mess) up. Yes ... and we can do it this coming election.

Look at the amount of tax dollars being spent yearly. Do you really think there isn't enough money to raise minimum wage, or have reasonable medical coverage for every citizen, or to provide free university access to everyone ... or to provide food for those when they're in need. What are we paying taxes for then?

I used to be afraid of the term Socialism ... at least until I thought about it. I used to think it meant that everyone would be dressed in the same grey-colored pants and shirts, and the same grey-type cap, and that we'd have to wait in line for 3 days for a loaf of bread. But that just isn't true.

Social programs (like Social Security) are just that, they are for the people, social ... that's where our tax dollars should be going.

Has Socialism changed? Have we changed? I'll tell you something else, I'd rather see my tax dollars being spent feeding my neighbors then blowing up foreign cities and their occupants. I'd rather see my tax dollars being spent paying for all American children to reach University levels of education, instead of funding covert operations around the world. And (one more here) I'd rather see my tax dollars being spent on teaching other countries how to become self-supportive.

So while I'm not saying you should consider being a "card-carrying commies", I do think, the idea of social programs, for the people that pay the taxes to the governments, ought to be. And governments that create wars ought to be abolished. Well, not necessarily abolished ... but forced to change by vote. We don't need to live the way we do.

There are so many good things people could be doing, if old fashioned governments were not getting in the way of people’s will. This what people want all around the world ... just a fair deal.

Now, let's consider this upcoming election. Here's a fact:

The Republicans have had over a 100 years to set-up a social health care program.

Wait ... before you speak ... here's another fact:

The Democrats have also had a 100 years to do so.

But wait ... one more fact:

We, the people ... have nothing. No results ... why?

Because their goal is not the people ... their goal is satisfying lobbyists and corporations.

Now, you can look at issue after issue, and you'll see that they all have the same results. Nothing for "We the people" ... with one exception - a History full of war and bloodshed - that's the big money machine.

Now, I'm not saying don't vote ... goodness no. I am saying that "we, the people” should vote for a change in the direction our government is leading us. We can do that simply by voting Republicans and Democrats out of their high offices.

You know, my father used to say that social programs were no good, that if you worked hard, you'd get ahead. "We don't need social programs" ... "that was the Communist way". But that's not today's America.

Well, between you and me, I know lots of people that have worked hard for 20, 30 even 40 years and you know what? They're losing their homes, losing their businesses, losing everything they worked hard for ... and most are losing it to high taxes and out of control spending and warring by our Government. Big business has raped the people of this country and continues to do so, even today, even tomorrow when you wake up!

I urge you to consider changing the core way our Government does business this election. Don't vote Democratic, don't vote Republican. Vote that little voice in the back of your head that says "Why, when I wake up everyday is there more news of war and world poverty? Is this the world I want to live in?". We can change this. Now is a great time to do it, too. The Republicans and Democrats are busy calling each other names and blaming each other for doing nothing .... don't you believe it! It's what they want. They are both "do nothing" parties.

Vote for some 3rd party or independent. Let's be socially responsible. If not for our sake, then for our childrens sake.

And you know what? I'm almost sorry "I Read The News Today .... Oh Boy".

Is there such a thing as Social Democracy?

A Society in which the goal or purpose is for the betterment of every child, woman and man?

A Society in which the commanding value is the life of every child, woman and man?

Nice Frank Zappa quote :-). As Norman Thomas once said: "The secret of a good life is to have the right loyalties and hold them in the right scale of values". Something this country (US) just can't seem to do.
