The group stopped abruptly, eyeing the approaching alien with fear and suspicion. Although Barbara knew the being was not Gartan and that other of his species were agents on the ship, even she was taken aback.
Her father seemed close to pounding on the pterodactyl-like being in an effort to protect his family, when Tilly darted between them to act as a mediator.
The being from the planet Bhruta, was clearly annoyed and touchy about being mistaken for the traitor, Gartan, but Tilly jumped in with “Begging your pardon agent, but they have recently had a very bad experience with one of your kind, no reflection on you, of course, please let me introduce you! These are Earthlings – the ones we are here to help. This is Barbara, the very first Earth O&N agent, this is her son, Al, and her parents, Amy and Joe, to whom we have just made ourselves known.” Barbara and her parents murmured apologies, while Al went up to the stranger and said, “Real sorry to have hurt your feelings, you just scared us a bit, that’s all.” ...
The Bhrutan, in a bit of a rush himself, eyed Al for a moment, then decided to accept Tilly’s explanation and introductions. He grunted acknowledgement and moved on.
Still it took Tilly and Suli some fast talking, which they were quite good at, to really convince Joe that the alien was not stalking his daughter and grandson.
When they next passed a group of unmorphed Qwetzles, compared to other aliens they had been exposed to, Tilly and Suli’s kind just seemed a bit like small elves, and were certainly not frightening. In fact, their appearance seemed to have a calming effect – as if they were somehow familiar. And no doubt they were, their kind did appear in many Earth “fairy tales.” Of course, there had been Qwetzle agents present on Earth, now and then, throughout the past several millennia.
Bard and Bird were updated on every detail related to the Earth group’s actions and interactions. Barring something drastically unforeseen, the two Eldestan had already decided between themselves that making Barbara’s whole family agents would be the best solution for everyone. Amy and Joe’s farm was just isolated enough to make it great place to stash several O&N agents! Al was considered a bit young, but he was also the most adaptable and accepting because of his youth. He had already shown his discretion in the past.
Bard was glad the family had managed to accept the agent that looked like Gartan, their reaction should help in convincing Glaboo and the Approval Committee. Though it was true, that with the two Eldestan speaking for the Earth group, it was unlikely any would protest the recommendation. But, still the formalities had to be observed.
Dave had now recuperated and the Earthlings had had a chance to rest. It was almost time to return the group to Earth – they could not remain missing for much longer. Questions had already been raised in the past related to Barbara – it would not do for there to be more.
The mission on Earth had had more than enough delays, without any question. First the Examinators, then Jonglire and more Examinators! Sadly, the planet was in ever-increasing danger.
After an uneventful night, Grrphh returned to the suite shared by the Earthlings and the O&N agents working with them. He asked if they had enjoyed their stay so far, to which there were many affirmative exclamations. “Glad to hear it,” Grrphh told them as they finished breakfast, “Bard and Bird have requested everyone’s presence as soon as you are finished eating.”
Tilly and Suli knew that a decision had to be made about whether to erase memories or accept new agents. They looked at Grrphh and each other with concern, which they did their best to hide from Barbara and her family, who were rather looking forward to seeing Bard and Bird again.
Barbara asked, “How are they doing? I do so hope they are feeling better and have had a chance to rest!”
Al jumped in, adding, “I hope so too! Do you know, Grrphh? And what about Peliix? Have you heard anything about him? Is he with Bard? I still feel kinda bad about losing him, and I kinda miss him too – didn’t think I would though,” he laughed.
“Well,” Grrphh answered, “I haven’t actually seen Bard or Bird, but Glaboo is doing fine and she assured me that the Eldestan seemed much more rested. But enough with the questions, you will see for yourselves shortly. The less talking and more eating, the sooner it will be.” And with that Grrphh turned away and busied himself at an access terminal till the others finished breakfast. He did not have to wait long.
There was an aura of excitement and expectation that hung over the group as they walked through the ship’s corridors on the way to their meeting with Bard and Bird. Though the Earthlings had not been specifically told what was being decided, everyone sensed that something important was about to transpire. Barbara was probably the most worried, for her family’s sake.
As soon as they entered the large audience room, Barbara knew that their status was to be decided. Bard and Bird welcomed them warmly – the others present, mostly senior agents and administers, sat aside, observing.
Of these, only Glaboo acknowledged them directly, and then with instructions. “Barbara, Tilly, Suli, John and Grrphh, I must ask you to step outside for a short while. Amy, Joe and Al must now answer a few questions. None of you are to worry, a decision is not to be made instantly, and no harm will come to any of you, no matter the outcome. You have all earned great honor and respect for your efforts and help.”
With that, Barbara and her alien friends were ushered from the room...
