“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

All My Aliens - Sci-Fi Soap Opera #110

Serial StoryBy Blue1Moon
Alienlove.com Editor

Dave tried to reassure Barbara: “Don’t worry, however, it turns out, you are all considered heroes – either they will be returned to Earth not remembering their 'vacation', or they will be made agents, or perhaps official contacts... I’m not even sure which you are hoping for!”

Barbara sighed, “I am not sure what to hope for either – I sure wouldn’t want my memories erased! On the other hand, having the memories and knowledge of what is going on puts them all in danger. I guess I can only hope for the best, whatever that might be. I do trust Bard though, and Bird seems much like him.”

They had been shown to a smallish waiting area – it contained an eating area, a viewscreen, some currently popular time-passing games, as well as a number of things whose purpose Barbara was unsure. After picking at a snack Dave had ordered, and sighing several times, Barbara asked, “Do you think they will be long?” ...

Dave shook his head in the negative. He was explaining that the “interview” would probably be fairly brief, but that the decision could take much longer, when Peliix entered the room. His Teachers had finally given him a break - or perhaps it was they who needed a respite from Peliix' bitter complaints about the loneliness of unending individual instruction and study.

Grrphh and John were busy with a game of Qeztek, and hadn’t acknowledged the small alien’s arrival. Peliix had spent all the time he wasn't with a Teacher, alone, and was not about to go unnoticed. After bowing to Dave and Barbara, and winking at Tilly and Suli, he asked Grrphh, “Could I get in on the next hand? This really is my favorite game! I only tell you this because you are my friends – and I do not want to part you from your money unfairly – but be prepared to lose!” he ended with a challenge.

For the Eldestan and O&N representatives, there were few questions or tests that would seem to illuminate the situation regarding Amy, Joe and Al.

All three had been plunged into the middle of O&N’s operations, and had acted sensibly and with honor, while offering all possible assistance, without question. They were clearly reasonably comfortable in the environs of the ship, and had accepted the many different alien species present, at least as well as could be expected as far as ‘first’ contacts went.

As a result, Bard and Bird engaged the three Earthlings only in some idle chat, in observance of O&N protocol. When it appeared that the Eldestan were about to dismiss them, Al spoke up.

“I sure hope you are gonna let us help you guys with the mission. We have tried really hard so far! Besides, it is our planet you, know," Al told them. "Please don’t erase our memories, I don’t want to forget you guys and all the fun we’ve had! Well, I guess it wasn’t all 'fun' – but still I wouldn’t wanna to not be able to even remember it!”

Amy and Joe nodded to each other then Amy spoke, “Joe and I would like to apply for membership in O&N.”

“That’s right,” added Joe. “How can I protect my family if I don’t even know what is going on? And wiping our memories, won’t erase the memories of our enemies. It would put us at too much of a disadvantage, this late in the game!”

Bird nodded acknowledgement, while Bard responded, “We agree, but there are other possible options that can be considered. For instance, we could place you on another member planet, where you could live out your lives in safety and happiness – there are some beautiful places in the 1,000 World Federation. Many of them would be thrilled for a chance to have a family from Earth among them.”

“NO!” all three of the Earthlings responded immediately. “That would be like dying – everything we have ever known would be gone! Please don’t make us do that,” Amy pleaded.

Bard was only slightly surprised at their vehemence – he hadn’t expected that they would agree to that option, and told them “Your requests will be taken under consideration. You may rejoin Barbara now while we make our decision. You will all be notified as soon as it is made.”

************

When they were reunited with Barbara, Al gave his mother a hug then spotted Peliix. He found himself quite relieved and even excited to see him. “Peliix!” he shouted, “there you are! I was so worried when you disappeared - I even missed you!” Al grabbed the little alien and swung him around, giddily.

Barbara, glad that Pelixx had distracted her son for a bit, hurried over to talk with Amy and Joe, hopefully out of Al’s earshot.

“What happened in there – how did it go? Do you know anything yet?,” the Earthwoman anxiously asked her parents.

Her father shrugged, “They weren’t saying... We asked to become agents, and were told it’d be ‘taken under consideration’!! I want to talk to Grrphh! I need to do some ‘considering’ too – and for that I’m going to need a few more details...”
