|| Who Is My Goddess?|
I understood the connection between all things as a child - that in some way, people, ‘Mother Earth’, animals, plants, minerals, the universe itself, were all connected to each other, and that this connection was a manifestation of ‘God’. That it was the very existence of this connection, that made ‘magic’, ‘miracles’, ESP, astrology, the ability to contact those that have passed over, telepathy, telekinesis, prayer, even voodoo, possible and “real”. To me, all people are my brothers and sisters, the different ways they view the Higher Power, are just different reflections of the “All”,…
reflections that relate to their lives, environment, problems, and culture. These different facets are each part of the whole, we unfortunately, are unable to mentally encompass the whole, and therefore must be content with the ‘facets’ that we can comprehend.
The combination of this connectedness of all things and its resultant potential power, coupled with intent (sometimes without realization) makes ‘scientifically impossible’ things, possible. While my surety or ‘knowing’ of these things never wavered throughout my life, it would be decades before I realized that there were other like-minded people in the world. I knew nothing of the Goddess for many years, and actually first found her in fiction. But it was clear from these authors’ stories that they too shared the knowledge I was born with. Soon I found books and actually a couple of groups that understood/shared many of my beliefs. One was a Native American circle, the other was more Wiccan/Pagan in nature.
Who is my Goddess?
I was asked this question several years ago, much of my answer was what I knew as a child, but through study, experience, meditation, etc. I am, perhaps, better able to explain it than I was when I was young.
To begin at the beginning, my Goddess is the female half or reflection of the ‘All’, ‘Higher Power’, or ‘Great Spirit’. The Highest Power, to me, encompasses the entire cosmos, and includes the obvious connection between all things. We, as humans, are part of that Higher Power. The closest metaphor I can come up with is that we are like cells in the living body of the ‘Highest Power’, and we can affect the cells around us positively, negatively or not at all.
So, my Goddess is all things, as is my God - two halves of the whole (Ying/Yang). My sisters, brothers and myself, are all part of the Great Spirit. The many gods and goddesses that have been, and are honored, are the different reflections of this immense power - those reflections that we are capable of understanding and relating to.
My Goddess the living womb of birth, life, death, rebirth, dreams, that is also the Universe. She is nurturing, and loving - maiden, mother, crone. She is the Earth, my mother. She is the Moon - sometimes as grandmother, mother, sister, daughter, or guide. I feel her presence in the forest, flowers, rocks and animals. She is under my feet, nourishing and providing for me (earth), I breathe Her breath (air), She nourishes my soul (spirit), quenches my thirst and cleanses me (water), and gives me energy (fire). She is within me and all women, and She is all around me, a part of all things, if only I take the time to look. And I know that I, too, am a reflection of Her.
For myself, I have found that spirituality is often best practiced in a personal way, though being part of a like-minded group can be a heady and wonderful experience. Unfortunately, it often seems that as soon as things begin to get really organized, the intent changes. Someone wants to control things, or seeks power over others, or to financially enrich themselves. It is the same trend that I find so deplorable in large organized religious groups. The original message gets completely lost, as layer upon layer of rationalizations are added, as a vehicle for those seeking to benefit personally or to manipulate others.
When you try to follow a proscribed ritual exactly, like one found in a book, it isn’t much different from the rigid rituals offered by most churches, in my opinion. Far more important is doing something that resonates with you. Tools (crystals, candles, symbols, etc.) are great, but they are only that - ‘tools’ – use ones that you connect with, that feel right to you. Don’t worry about doing it ‘by the book,’ that almost defeats the purpose right from the beginning – it is about your connection or path to the Higher Power – not someone else’s.
Celebrate holidays and important events in a way that has meaning to you and in your life. This does not have to be in the form of an elaborate ritual. It might be a walk in the woods and re-connecting with the Earth, or planting some seeds, doing something to help the environment or others, meditation, sending out thoughts of love and peace into the universe, a visit to someone who is lonely or in need. Listen to your intuitions, do whatever feels right to you, as long as it brings no harm to others.
Attempts at manipulating others are never acceptable, for instance - love spells. Instead ask that love come to you, but do not try to force someone to love you. It is ok to seek good fortune, just not at the expense of someone else.
DREAMS IN THE DARKNESS
The darkness of sleep,
not unlike the darkness of Her womb,
Go back to the place of your beginning,
which is also the place of ending,
Awaiting rebirth, your spirit flies free,
to rediscover your oneness with the universe,
Go into the dark gladly,
know you are reborn each day.
