“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Art News: Well this is it – The Simpsons are Here, The Simpsons are Here!

VermontBy Sherlyn Meinz

Springfield, Vermont, Saturday, July 21, 2007: Crowds had already amassed by late morning in anticipation of The Simpsons Movie, premiering today to much fanfare, as AlienLove.com’s reporter and photographers headed downtown.

Tickets were being raffled off to lucky residents for the first showing in the small Springfield Theatre. Vendors had set up, media abounded and people milled everywhere among well known characters from the Simpsons. ....

On July 10th, at 2:00pm(EST) Springfield, Vermont had been voted “The Springfield” of Simpsons fame. Fourteen Springfields had originally competed for the title, with Vermont coming from behind at the last minute to win.

The top vote getting towns were:

Springfield VT – 15,367
Springfield, IL – 14,634
Springfield, OR – 13,894
Springfield, MA – 11,442

Though most of the month has been rainy, today’s celebration is taking place under a sunny sky. Events were hastily planned – as there was only eleven days from the announcement of winning town and the premiere of the movie. This resulted in very lengthy walks for celebrants as the vicinity around downtown Springfield was cordoned off, and well patrolled by police officers.

I was surprised that there were no signs that directed visitors to the quickest routes to the festivities from parking areas. However at least two of the possible routes treated visitors lovely views of the Black River and the waterfalls that cut through the center of Springfield, the river dropping 110 feet in an eighth mile span in the downtown area.

In light of the character Homer’s cartoon occupation, by mid-day protestors* of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Reactor were heading toward the festivities, handing out leaflets showing how an accident at the aging facility would impact almost all of New England.

An even bigger crowd was expected for later in the day.

Simpson Mania has hit Springfield, Vermont!

An alien was even spotted attending the festivities:

The movie will hit theatres across the country on July 27th, 2007.

Shut out of the world premiere (Score: 1)

I am one of 200 volunteers who appeared in the winning Springfield Vermont video. After we helped our local Chamber of Commerce win the contest, they turned their backs on us. We were kept off the invitation list so the elite people in town could attend the world premiere instead. And not even a word of thanks or mention of us in the public ceremony outside the theater.
