“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts.  This Is The Direction My America Ought To Be Going In

OpinionFrogDaddy

This past Sunday, I was driving in my car and on came a song I hadn't heard in a long time. I listened to the words, knowing them by heart from long ago, I found myself singing along without realizing it. I parked the car and sat there listening until the song ended ...

that's when it struck me. The words were so powerful that it instantly spanned the years and could've/should've been written yesterday. The difference is, that it probably wouldn't get the air-time it needed or deserved to get its message out today.

What has happened to our world?

What a mess our nations in.

How did we go from this song to these times?

Somehow, I keep thinking that this is the direction, my America ought to be going in.

----------------------------------------------------------

Peace Train

Now I've been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh I've been smiling lately, dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be, some day it's going to come

Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again

Now I've been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun

Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller
Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on now peace train

Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too
Cause it's getting nearer, it soon will be with you

Now come and join the living, it's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer, soon it will all be true

Now I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating, why can't we live in bliss

Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again

Couple of things strike me about this -

First - that the song was written by Yousef Islam & so people will automatically not heed it's message because of the ties to Islam and the current state of affairs. These same people would probably like it much better if it was written by, oh, say - Cat Stevens.

Second - I agree wholeheartedly that this same song would not be heard if it was new today. (Aside from the fact that it would have to be hip-hop to even be played at all). And if it were, it would be interpreted to be about the situation within the country & not the world as a whole.

One of the worst failings of our society today is our overpowering cynicism. And this affects not only the music of the generation.

Think about it - would Martin Luther King Jr. be able to motivate & convince the people of today that their actions within their own communities could change the world? And what about Ghandi or even JFK?

We need a return to 'cockeyed optimism' & the belief that, even though we aren't professional athletes, actors or singers, we can still make a difference in the world.

The bottom line for me is that we've forgotten that we don't have to be famous to be important.

Very well written and thought out. I wish people, especially young people would realize that we can make a huge difference in the world both here (US) and abroad if we put an effort into it. Things can change, and change for the better if we want them too. You are correct about the cynicism. That attitude of well, I can't change it or well, thats the way it is just doesn't cut it. You can see it in music, art and current television! (thats the worst). The truth is: we can change the way things are. It's been done before, and needs to be done again. I don't how vanity became a virtue in our world today but it has definetly taken a toll on our youth and our society.
