“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

 Stories/Poems: The Glasses

SpiritualityBy Soulgazer

In the land of once-a-pon a happening, there was a busy pedestrian crossing across a nether street. The vehicles moved speedily and invisibly, never slowing, never caring, their drivers ineffable and unreachable.

The crossing of this dangerous street had to be made by all, for there were things important to daily survival that resided upon both sides of the street. Years of casualties on a daily basis resulted in a system that helped the people cross with a minimum of fatalities.

It was observed that far fewer incidents happened at certain hours, and the Authorities of the Never-Town installed a pedestrian light. This crossing light was on a strict timer, indicating when it was legal to attempt to cross and when an attempted crossing would be illegal. ...

This light helped somewhat, for casualties were reduced somewhat, but still it remained a highly dangerous crossing, and the light remained in place for many centuries.

A young inventor appeared at the crossing one day, handing out spectacles. These spectacles allowed the wearer to actually see the here to for invisible vehicles as they made their passage, and so allowed the wearer of this new fangled gadget passage in absolute safety and security.

The people went to the Authorities of Never-Town, extolling the virtues of these fine new spectacles. The Authorities consulted the Town Ordinances, and determined that the inventor and his patrons had been making crossings at intervals when the crossing light had prohibited.

The inventor was jailed, and his spectacles were confiscated.

Centuries passed, and some people were still extolling the wonders of this inventor and his wonderful spectacles. Various groups formed to discuss this time in the history of their town.

Some people said that the inventor stopped the traffic on the street so that people could cross. Others said that the traffic on the street did not really exist at all, and the pedestrian light was tyranny imposed by the Authorities. Very few believed that the glasses were of any importance at all.
