To the editor,

In a country tottering on the brink of destroying itself by dreaming up better and better ways in which to kill people; by spending money that is needed to care for people on the military and a tottering empire; by making the air force into a computer game that bombs defenseless people; and by using the age-old method of fear to take us on this perilous journey; clearly one ought not be upset by one more bit of dismal information.

But I was when I found that tritium, which is in the headlines each day and is now leaking into the Connecticut River, has, according to the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, both “commercial and military applications.” ...

Along with lighting up road signs at night, “ tritium's primary function is to boost the yield of both fission and thermonuclear weapons”. The amount of tritium needed today depends upon our 2011 stockpile of some 5,000 nuclear warheads.

So we must add tritium to the list of profitable and menacing madness that is not only making our land and our rivers toxic, but is helping to turn our children's future into a death sentence. How much more evidence do we need to understand that, along with depleted uranium and plutonium, there is a perilous and shadowy connection between nuclear power and the military industrial complex?
