“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Action Alert: YOU vs. VT Yankee!

VermontFrom: Vermont Public Interest Research Group (VPIRG)

The Vermont Senate Finance committee voted late Thursday to send the Vermont Yankee relicensing bill to the full Senate! This means that the Senate will vote, next Wednesday, on whether or not to close Vermont Yankee on schedule in 2012. We are doing everything we can to win, from getting hundreds of calls into Senators to airing a TV ad starting on Saturday, and that means we need as many people as possible to be at the Vermont State House for this vote on Wednesday.

Join us for the vote next Wednesday: RSVP here.

You've gotten countless emails on Vermont Yankee. You've probably sent a few to your elected officials too. Maybe you even made a call or wrote a letter calling for Vermont Yankee to be closed. Unfortunately, all of that work could be undone in the next few days. ...

Before the vote was announced, Entergy was spending nearly a quarter million dollars a month on slick designer ads and high priced lobbyists. Now? Entergy is throwing everything they've got at their bid to relicense the rickety old plant, including the kitchen sink. They've even brought in a former head of the federal Nuclear Regulatory Committee to lobby for them.

We're pulling out all the stops to combat Entergy's lobbying money. We need you to join us at the statehouse next Wednesday to show your Senators their constituents want this plant closed, on time. Entergy will be turning out their people in force - we need to do the same.

The next few days are going to be the hardest of this campaign. Let's see this through.

Thanks for all that you do.

PS - Over the weekend VPIRG's new TV ad will go up on stations around Vermont. That's right - thanks to the generous contributions of VPIRG members, we're going toe to toe with Entergy in the statehouse, in communities around Vermont, and now on the air. Click here to see the ad (it's on the right side of the page).

We won this round, by vote of 26-4 to close on schedule (2012), but Entergy has no intention of giving up now...
