 Politics: A day for democracy, Vermont style

Last week's vote in the Vermont State Senate to close Vermont Yankee on schedule was a remarkable thing. When our Senators voted on Wednesday, instead of bending to the will of the multi-billion dollar corporation lobbying them, they acted on behalf of the Vermont citizens that they are there to represent.

That vote was a great example of Vermont's representative democracy. Tomorrow is your chance to take part in Vermont's tradition of truly direct democracy - Town Meeting Day.

Town meeting is a rare instance of real, face-to-face democracy that only happens in special places like Vermont. ...

Every year Vermonters gather to debate and make important decisions on everything from the roads we drive on to our energy future. I hope you'll take part in your local democracy at town meeting tomorrow [Tuesday, March 2].

If you're not sure where to vote or need help, call your Town Clerk - click here to find their number.

"Town hall meetings" have been reduced in the minds of most Americans to a campaign stunt - a candidate standing in front of a crowd taking (usually pre-approved) questions from the audience. In Vermont, we know that's not a town meeting.

Once a year, Vermonters hold real town meetings, where the citizens are the legislature of their towns. I hope you'll take the time to participate.
