|| Action Alert: A Call for Nationwide Response to Entergy Nuclear's Attack|
on the People of Vermont |
Entergy Nuclear of Lousiana is giving those of us who care about our futures a golden opportunity to exercise our power. This multi-national corporation is a poster boy for the callous pursuit of profit at the expense of health, safety and even state sovereignty.
Consider the current pox that Entergy has brought down upon the people of Vermont. In their negotiations to get permission to buy Vermont Yankee, corporate officials agreed to abide by future state statutes, and promised to forgo the right to sue the state over any statutes that might be contrary to Entergy's interests. But they were lying through their teeth, have sued the state, and have just won the first round in a federal court suit that reverses the state legislature's refusal to extend Vermont Yankee's operating license. The judge has empowered only the Public Service Board to decide the reactor's fate.
In the last few years, Entergy has lied repeatedly in testimony at the Vermont State House, from topics as varied as the aforementioned promise, to the non-existence of underground pipes that turned out to not only exist but also to be leaking tritium. Entergy lobbyists have been a noxious presence in our citizen legislature's House, cajoling and threatening but not succeeding in having their way. ...
Now that they won the first round of the lawsuit, Entegy has the judge's approval to continue operating past its March 21 close down date. We have faith that our state will appeal the decision, and we will work to encourage our PSB to deny the Certificate of Public Good. But more importantly, we are mobilizing our entire region to descend upon Entergy's presence in southern Vermont and engage with a campaign of rallies, marches, direct action and political engagement to make it increasingly difficult for Entergy to conduct business as usual.
We are calling upon you, our friends across the country, who are ready to work to take back our nation from the concentration of wealth and power that now puts us at risk daily. Entergy has nuclear installations in multiple states, from Massachusetts to Texas. For those of you on the fence about nuclear's role in our CO2 future, consider Entergy's coal fired plants, like the Independence coal plant in Arkansas that has been helping Entergy pollute since 1983. We are asking you to find an Entergy installation near you. Then during the month of March, gather there and demonstrate in solidarity with the people of Vermont and indeed for all of us to say that one by one, we will focus on and bring contempt upon any corporation that shows itself to be acting to the detriment of our well being.
Those of you in New Orleans might want go to the gates of CEO Jackie W. Leonard's exclusive community and greet him on his way to work. He puts nuclear waste in our backyard, it only seems fitting that we put some boisterous company in his.
We want every American who lives anywhere near an Entergy related establishment to know the truth about the company and how they have used their influence with the federal government (as they brag about on their website) to increase their profits and deny the sovereign rights of communities and their governments. If we coordinate a campaign with publicity about every action, we can create a story that will resonate with the rest of the country and contribute to the growing political consciousness that the Occupy Movement has exposed. Now is the time to keep up the momentum. Entergy and its VY license expiration date give us an excellent focus for the next couple of months. Please join us.
Never violence, only victory.
