After a bit of fussing and a special dragon event that included fireworks, staged in her honor, Hildie was helped onto Wilanona’s back. Bianca leapt up to join her as if she had been practicing all day. Annaw settled on her shoulder, for the ride home. Wilanona made sure that the flight was even easier on her injured partner than the trip out to the Dragonfest. Although many had reassured her that Hildie would be fine, the dragon still worried and felt that somehow it must be her fault. The trip had been her idea in the first place...
It was getting pretty late by the time they got back to Aunt Hildie’s house. Bianca helped her aunt dismount and get into the house. Wilanona chose to sleep wrapped around the house, instead of at a distance away. After settling her aunt in bed, and rolling in the television, Bianca realized that the phone was beeping with messages. There were three from her parents! Each message was a little more frantic than the last, as it got later in the evening
Bianca hurried to call them back, and upon hearing her voice they were so relieved that they agreed to let the girl stay the summer if needed, to help out. The doctor had already called and explained the situation to them. Promising they would be by in the morning to check on them, they told their only child to try to get some sleep.
As a result of Bianca’s parents’ presence, Annaw spent most of the following day out with Wilanona. The two dragons did not go far, Wilanona mostly wanted to hover over the house, but eventually Annaw convinced her to go in search of food. The young dragon understood Wilanona’s concern for her partner, but she was hungry! Very hungry! And with non-dragon people running in and out doing errands, Bianca and Hildie weren’t in much of a position to feed them.
Bianca’s mother cooked just about all the food in the house, her father running back and forth to the store. By mid-afternoon, it seemed there was enough food prepared to feed a small army – or a couple hungry dragons. Her parents walked out the door, promising to call daily and be back to check on things in a few days.
The moment their car left the driveway, Annaw popped back into the house. Wilanona let out such a roar, that Bianca ran out to see if everything was okay. She finally had the idea to open the window in Hildie’s room, so Wilanona could stick her nose in, or put an eye to the opening and see for herself. Hildie got to giggling so hard at the dragon’s antics, that she hobbled out of bed. Bianca was worried at first, but Hildie started laughing, “Sweetheart, I’m really not so bad. I felt awful letting your Mum and Dad do all that shopping and cooking for us. Truly, I am quite sure I could manage by myself, but then you wouldn’t have the summer to learn about dragons and meet some of our friends. Things have worked out well, indeed!”
Bianca smiled, and decided to bring a couple lawn chairs outside. Sitting in the yard with Wilanona, Hildie and her dragon were both much happier. Before long, visitors began arriving. Quite a few from the Dragonfest had come to check on them, including Dr. Lee and his dragon, Marrack. Bianca was rather surprised, Annaw swooped through the air, greeting visitors warmly.
Dr. Lee laughed when Bianca wondered at his making house calls on a dragon’s back, no less, “I told you Bianca, dragon partners take care of each other and the group as a whole. There aren’t all that many of us, and things can go easily wrong when dragons are involved with people who can’t see them, but who sometimes feel the effects of their presence. There is only one dragon hospital, and only dragons or partners that are dire straits are generally brought there. A huge facility is out of the question, it would be too hard to hide. Older dragons, being of such great size are usually easiest to treat wherever they are. Putting a human dragon partner in a regular hospital is very difficult – their dragons are very unhappy and insist on staying close by. Though mostly invisible, there are those who seem to be aware of something odd when dragons are about.”
Bianca nodded, then noticed that someone had accompanied Dr. Lee. Aunt Hildie smiled when Bianca finally acknowledged their other visitors. The teenage boy was being mentored by the doctor, his dragon had hatched the same week as Annaw. He and Bianca had met at the Dragonfest the day before.
The young man, a few years older than Bianca said, “Hi Bianca, remember me and Skreetan?”
The girl nodded, a little shyly, “Sure I do Daniel! Hi to you too, Skreetan!”
Hildie and Dr. Lee told the two take their young dragons off to practice flying together. Annaw and Skreetan sang with excitement, swooping their partners to hurry them along.
They performed aerial antics all the way out to the “practice” field, which was beyond Hildie’s garden. The two had a great time competing with each other for attention and praise, and provided a very entertaining time for the watchers. Occasionally, Wilanona and Marrack joined them, teaching them a wonderful interactive aerial dance as the sun set.
Bianca felt like she’d had a chance to get to know Daniel a bit by the time the two re-joined their mentors to watch the show. She sighed in wonder at the beauty of the dragons’ dance. Even the seasoned dragon partner’s watched in awe.
