“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

 Science Fiction/Fantasy Book Selection

Science FictionBlue1Moon’s Recommendations

The Science Fiction Channel has been advertising its new mini-series Earthsea heavily. Perhaps you would be interested in reading Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin, upon which the series was based. There were two other books that were part of this classic trilogy: Tombs of Atuan, and The Farthest Shore. I have read these books many times over the years, they are long time favorites and I enjoyed them more than the Harry Potter series. They are appropriate for teenagers, but a good read for adult fantasy fans as well. Tehanu, written much later than the original triology, was not quite as impressive. It continues the story of one the main characters in Ms. LeGuin’s second book, Tombs of Atuan.

I have chosen a few other fiction and science fiction books, which I think you might enjoy, or that would make worthy gift items. I will continue to add to this list. Read more for reviews of City, by Clifford D. Simak and two of Gregory Maquire’s recent books. You will also find a few books recommend by FrogDaddy related to the spiritual realm.

City
by Clifford D. Simak

This classic is a recently found treasure for me – wow what an incredible book – a definite must read if you haven’t already partaken. A stunningly thought-provoking book - for the first time in my life, I began re-reading it as soon as I finished it. Following history far into the future….Dogs have inherited the Earth when the book begins, and humanity is only a fable. The book presents a number of dog ‘fables’ about humans, each is annotated with the opinions of contemporary dog scholars trying to interpret their meaning. The book begins: “These are the stories that the Dogs tell when the fires burn high and the wind is from the north. Then each family circle gathers at the hearth-stone and the pups sit silently and listen and when the story’s done they ask many questions. ‘What is Man?,’ ‘What is a city?’ or ‘What is war?’”

I recommend it highly.

Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
by Gregory Maquire

What a different spin on the Wizard of Oz story! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was quite different from anything I have read before. Ever wonder what was going on in Oz before the Wizard dropped in, or who ruled this land before the Wiz took over? Learn about poor, Elphaba, the baby born with green skin, who ended up being called the ‘Wicked Witch of the West.’ Learn about the circumstances of her birth, and early life, the sister who was born deformed. Elphaba and the Glinda had a long relationship, before any of them were called ‘witch.’ The story begins with Elphaba overhearing Dorothy and friends discussing the rumors about her.

“She was castrated at birth” replied the Tin Woodsman calmly. “She was born hermaphroditic…” “Everyone is entitled to an opinion,” said the Lion, airily. “She was deprived of a mother’s love, is how I heard it. She was an abused child. She was addicted to medicine for her skin condition.”

This book is humorous, political and slightly twisted, Mr. Maquire’s vision of this old tale gives one a whole new perspective.

Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister
By Gregory Maguire

Like ‘Wicked,’ a totally different spin on the well-known and loved, old fairytale, Cinderella. Ever wonder about the lives of the ‘ugly step-sisters’, and ‘wicked step-mother.’ How did they come into Cinderella’s life? Did they really abuse her? What happened to Cinderella’s birth mother? Why didn’t Cinderella ever leave the house? What was her father doing, as Cinderella cleaned?

Another thought-provoking twisted tale by Mr. Maquire, I enjoyed this one too, and loved the ending!

Mirror, Mirror
By Gregory Maguire

Haven’t read this one yet, and hoping it lives up to my high expectations after reading Mr. Maguire’s other books. I plan on putting this one on my Christmas list!

These books are all available through Amazon and purchasing them through this site will help support AlienLove, costs nothing extra, and provides some great Amazon deals.
