“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Rants: Democrats Finally Jumping on the Bandwagon?

AlienLove Editor

Are ‘we the people’ being heard?? The media finally being forced to cover some real news? Perhaps there is some actual movement from the Democratic party?? Could it be that a whole bunch of Democratic leaders are ready to jump on the bandwagon the American people (their constituents) are insisting can no longer be denied??

I've gotten an amazing array of emails from various Democrats over the last couple days...

Let’s see there was an e-mail notice on Wednesday (11/22/05) from Democrats.org : “At Last Democrats Stand and Fight!” [1]

This was in reference to Democrat Minority Leader, Harry Reid, who called for answers (to why, how, an illegal war was started) and of course asking for money.

Funny how even their own email refers to the action as “At Last!”

I also received one from Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee Chairman, “Did You See What Happened?” in regards to Harry Reid’s actions [see copy of Dean’s email below.]

Later in the day, I heard from John Kerry, “Help bring 20,000 troops home over the holidays” [2]

Then, on Thursday, November 3rd, I heard from Progressive Democrats of America with news from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi: “Cover-up Congress Refuses to Investigate War Abuses” [3]

I did not send money to Harry Reid [4] or any of the other Democrats, but I did write to tell him that it was ABOUT TIME! - along with a few other choice words about what I thought about the Democratic party's non-action over the past 5 years.

Our messages are getting through!!

I also informed him...

That I had just been downloading postcards to send to my elected representatives from: http://backbonecampaign.org/

A "Spine" card to send to all our elected officials!

What a great idea – and if anyone ever needed some backbone and a few dashes of spine...the Democrats do!

So perhaps we are finally seeing the beginning of a political reaction as a result of “we the people” standing. Hmmm...there are elections looming in 2006 - and the people are definitely not happy - I think quite a few of our elected representatives are beginning to realize, on both sides, that this state of affairs could affect their re-election plans.

In other good news this week, we hear from the FCNL (Friends Committee on National Legislation):

Your Senator is Key to Action on Darfur – “the October 18th National Call-In Day to protect the people of Darfur was a great success… 11 additional senators decided to cosponsor the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (S. 1462)… Our persistence is paying off. Now we need to keep working to persuade the Senate to act by building an even stronger foundation of support for the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act (DPAA).”

Torture: Your Messages Are Working, Keep It Up – FCNL
“This week has brought dramatic developments in the public demand for Congress to outlaw U.S. use of torture. Your letters and phone calls have had a powerful impact, contributing to a wave of shock and disgust over the administration’s torture policy and practice. Your messages are reaching Washington, with profound impact…”

[Take] "Action: Tell your representative that he or she must do everything possible to retain the Senate’s bi-partisan “McCain amendment” as part of the military appropriations bill. Tell them that the amendment must not be modified to allow for exceptions - no exception for “presidential waiver,” no exception for the geographic location of the detainee, and no exception for the CIA. To find a sample letter and information on your elected congressional representatives, visit the FCNL website at”:

[4] Harry Reid’s speech:

Email from Howard Dean:

"I wanted to pass along to you some of the reaction to my friend Harry Reid's bold move yesterday, when he forced the Senate into an extraordinary meeting about the manipulation of intelligence leading up to the Iraq war.
Today the Republican National Committee reacted with a hit piece on our Democratic Senate Leader. The attack document leads off bashing Reid for his action yesterday, claiming that the Washington Post called Reid's action a "cheap trick". But that's just not true --
The increasingly desperate Republicans picked the only two words they liked -- here's the full quote from the Post article that shows that the truth still doesn't matter to them:

It was a cheap trick -- and it worked brilliantly. Reporters dropped their stories about Alito and covered the melee in the Senate. CNN titled the episode "Congress in Crisis." MSNBC displayed a live shot of a mostly empty hallway outside the Senate chamber and a clock showing elapsed time since the Senate went into closed session. Republicans knew they were licked. They agreed to set a schedule for the long-delayed intelligence committee investigation Democrats demanded. "Today, the American people had a victory," Reid declared.
[Washington Post, 11/2/2005]

Enough is enough, and Harry Reid knows it. We must demand accountability for manipulated intelligence on Iraq and the White House cover-up. I support his action completely, and so do more than 10,000 others who have written notes of thanks to him in less than 24 hours.
If you know someone who supports Democrats who stand up and fight, invite them to send Harry Reid a note of thanks:
It is worth noting that a year ago today we lost an election. Tens of millions of us were disappointed because we put so much of ourselves into that cause. We donated money, we talked to friends, we knocked on doors. We invested ourselves in the political process.
That process did not end a year ago. It continues right now -- as we fight on the life and death issues that matter today, and as we build a permanent Democratic Party in all 50 states that will win elections in decades to come.
These are not one-time, short-term investments. We will only create lasting change if that sense of obligation and responsibility becomes a permanent part of our lives.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
We will not be silent.
I will personally deliver your note of thanks to Harry Reid, along with my own, because our elected leaders must know that when they show courage they speak for all of us.

Thank you.

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.
