“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Book Reviews: New Union Catalogue For Hellraisers

Press Associates, Inc. (PAI)

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (PAI)--Mary Harris “Mother” Jones’ favorite method of “hell-raising” was “to lead an army of enraged women” upon a non-union coal mine, “making a frightful clatter, pounding on tin wash tubs. This visitation...was terrifying to both the mules and the non-union workers, usually stampeding both—with the women in pursuit.” Details like this, as well as how to raise more hell in more modern workplaces, can be found among the wide range of books available in the new 2005 holiday catalogue of Annapolis-based Union Communication Services, an all-union shop...

The free catalogue is available from UCS, at 1-800-321-2545, or http://www.unionist.com/

UCS, which also publishes nationally noted stewards’ guides, carries Mother Jones’ autobiography, bios of A. Phillip Randolph, Eugene Debs and Cesar Chavez, primers on labor law and ergonomics, a new book on how to organize contract cam-paigns and--we told you Mother Jones was updated—A Troublemaker’s Handbook 2.

Union communicators and unionists’—and non-unionists’—kids will also benefit from books in the catalogue. The communicators can order Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media, a devastating expose of media moguls by Christopher Martin.

And there are historical, current and coloring books for children, ranging from a story of youthful coal miners during the 1902 Pennsylvania miners strike, to A Community Of Workers Coloring Book, to a book of stories about child workers forced to strike. For the real toddlers, there’s even a book about campaigning cows.

If the boss decides to turn your workplace upside down, jeopardizing you and your job, there’s a book in the catalogue on how to deal with that, too. And it has books on family and medical leave, workplace rights, sexual harassment and the right to privacy.

But not everything is heavy: There’s even a book of cartoons by veteran labor illustrators Huck and Konopacki:
“Two-Headed Alien Shrinks Labor Movement”

My Grandfather new Mother Jones. He met her when she came to West Virgina to help with the unionizing of the Coal mine that he worked at . They both stood arm in arm against the owners. But my grandfather would pick up a shot gun every now and again when peaceful protest would not work.
