“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Screwed Again: Ferguson Exposes the Creeping Militarization of Police Forces

Action Alert
Your town and mine are being militarized, just like Ferguson.

By Jim Hightower

The tragedies unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri, are doubly infuriating.

First, there is the obvious outrage of yet another unarmed black teenager being stopped by one of the town’s white police officers as he was walking to his grandmother’s home.

A scuffle ensued, and officer Darren Wilson fatally shot Michael Brown (six times, including twice in the head, according to an autopsy report). The young man’s corpse was then left lying in the street for hours, during which time the police didn’t even bother to notify his family. Understandably, furious citizens have erupted in protest.

Outrage No. 2 is that Ferguson’s police, practically all of whom are white in a town that’s two-thirds black, responded to the public outcry like an occupying army. ...

The News: Why You Should Fear Big Bad Cable

Action Alert
Comcast's plan to merge with Time Warner Cable could leave millions of Americans stranded on the digital equivalent of a winding dirt road.

 By Timothy Karr

Twenty-five years ago this month, Sir Tim Berners-Lee introduced an open protocol for sharing information that gave everyday Internet users the power over what they created and whom they connected with online.

His concept quickly evolved into the World Wide Web. One British research scientist’s idea for people-to-people communications became a global engine for empowerment, economic growth and free speech.

Berners-Lee’s idea was to create a web of limitless access and choice. And he was largely successful.

We can use YouTube to share and watch videos, or we can switch over to Vimeo, Instagram, or Blip. We can speak directly with friends using Skype, Hangout, FaceTime or other voice and video services. We can connect and communicate anything with anyone at any time.

But all of that could change. ...

To be delivered to: President Barack Obama

Petition Background

On August 21, U.S. citizen Bradley Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking classified information to the public about the killing of civilians in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; drone strikes in Yemen; torture in Guantanamo, Iraq, and Egypt; the coup in Honduras; corruption in Tunisia, the U.S. use of cluster bombs, and the blockade of Gaza,

The News: The Koch Brothers' Dangerous Plan

Action AlertFrom: U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders,
[email protected]

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Tribune Company was exploring the possible sale of some of its major newspapers including The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, and Hoy, amongst others.

More recently, it has been rumored that one of the strongest potential buyers is Koch Industries, owned by the billionaire Koch brothers.

As you no doubt know, Charles and David Koch are right-wing extremists who already exercise enormous economic and political power in our country. As a family worth some $50 billion dollars they have reportedly spent at least $400 million attempting to influence the 2012 national elections. They have also established and funded dozens of organizations that actively support the privatization of Social Security, massive cuts in programs for working families, attacks on workers' rights, more tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations and other causes benefitting the rich and powerful. ...

History/Culture: Let Us Remember King by Making His Dream a Reality

Action Alert
From: Michael T. McPhearson, United for Peace & Justice

Today marks the 45th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of history’s greatest champions for peace and justice. Dr. King died working to bring about his vision of a just and peaceful world. Killed in Memphis TN by an assassin’s bullet, King was in the city to support striking Black sanitation workers who received considerably less pay than their White counterparts.

A year earlier to the day, Dr. King delivered his Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech at Riverside Church in New York City. Widely known in peace circles, but seldom mentioned elsewhere, he laid out clear moral and pragmatic reasons why he was against the war in Vietnam. He called on our nation to have a “radical revolution of values,” to “shift from a ‘thing-oriented’ society to a ‘person-oriented’ society.” He called on us to confront the evils of hate including racism and bigotry in all its forms, materialism and poverty, and militarism or war. ...

Peace News: Spinning our Wheels for Peace & Justice

Action AlertCindy Sheehan's Soapbox

Literally and Figuratively Spinning our Wheels for Peace

There are millions of mothers mourning the deaths of children today (and every day) ten years after Shocking and Awful.

Some of the mothers on the American "side" take false comfort in the lie that the war was justified and view their sons or daughters as “heroes” who died “keeping America safe” or some crap like that.

However, there are a few of us who know the facts: the war was “justified” by lies and fought for profit and control of resources and our kids are lying in permanent graves for temporary and temporal gain.

So, what’s happening now? Obama is president, the wars are over, our troops are home, Iraq is rebuilt and peaceful, and the oceans have stopped rising, George and Dick have been held accountable? Actually, none of these things are true, yet we see few people out protesting anymore.

There has been some good energy around the case of Pvt. Bradley Manning and his persecution by the Obama regime. Of course, Manning in being persecuted for exposing the lies, yet Dick and George are still playing footsies with the 1%, as they are foot loose and fancy free. Opposition to drone warfare is up, with little recognition that Obama has increased that program profoundly since he’s been in office. ...

Screwed Again: 70 communities to rally for Bradley this weekend!

Action AlertFrom: Bradley Manning Support Network
and Courage to Resist

This weekend, more than 70 cities worldwide are marking PFC Bradley Manning’s 1,000th day in jail without a trial. Supporters are holding rallies, marches, live performances, art installations, and other creative events to raise awareness about the young Army private. The coordinated actions span five continents, with events planned throughout the U.S., across Europe, and as far as South Korea, Portugal, Uganda, and Australia. For example, hundreds in New York City will see a theater production based on Bradley's own words, followed by a rally at Times Square.

“While criminal bankers enjoy immunity because they are ‘too big to fail,’ and now even to jail, a heroic young man faces life in prison for exposing the truth. This global outpouring of concern in protest of Bradley’s 1,000th jail of imprisonment is inspiring,” noted Jeff Paterson, Courage to Resist Project Director and Bradley Manning Support Network Steering Committee member. ...

Politics: Five things you should know about last night's vote.

Action AlertFrom: Becky Bond, CREDO Action

There's a lot of spin out there about the deficit deal that was cut over the holiday. We wanted to share our thinking on the deal.

Over 20,000 CREDO Action members called their senators, their representatives, the White House and Congressional leadership to stop a bad deal. And we were joined by thousands of other progressives in advocating to save Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare, and to let the Bush tax cuts expire for the wealthiest 2% of Americans.

And we most definitely had an impact. Cuts to Social Security benefits, which the White House proposed in final negotiations, were blocked. Raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 was also shot down early on when it was floated as a trial balloon. Action by voters who raised their voices made a difference in the debate.

Unfortunately, the White House, which was in a strong position when it went into negotiations with Republicans, chose to cut a bad deal in order to make the overhyped "Fiscal Cliff" deadline. Instead, we should have waited for a new Congress to be sworn in on January 3 — with a Senate which will include progressive champions like Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin, and a House with more Democrats and fewer Tea Party Republicans.

CREDO, along with other progressive groups like PCCC, MoveOn, DFA, ColorOfChange, and others, have said all along that no deal was better than the bad deal on the table.

But last night the House ratified the White House's deal with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. And the White House made the Bush tax cuts permanent for a huge chunk of the wealthiest 2%, giving away much needed leverage for staving off future cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. ...

Health News: Organic Consumers Association Calls for Boycott

Action Alert
of Organic Brand Parent Companies That Helped Defeat Prop 37

From: Organic Consumers Association, organicconsumers.org

FINLAND, Minn. - Nov. 15, 2012 - The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) today called for a national boycott of the popular natural and organic brands owned by 10 parent companies that donated to defeat Prop 37, the California Right to Know GMO labeling initiative.

The OCA is also calling on other consumer protection groups, and public health, agriculture, natural health, environmental and political groups to urge their members and supporters to participate in the boycott.

"Among the largest bankrollers of the NO on 37 campaign were huge multinational food and beverage companies whose subsidiaries make billions selling popular organic and 'natural' brands," said Ronnie Cummins, Director of the OCA and the Organic Consumers Fund, which donated more than $1 million to the YES on 37 campaign. "It's time to send these companies a message: Either start supporting GMO labeling initiatives, including the upcoming one in Washington State, or consumers will stop buying your products," Cummins said. ...

War News: 2,000+ Dead, Suicides Skyrocketing –These are Not Just Numbers!

Action AlertFrom: United For Peace and Justice, unitedforpeace.org

Marine Cpl. Taylor J. Baune, of Andover, MN died June 13, 2012. Taylor represents the 2,000 U.S. military fatality in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Taylor Buane, 21, is much more than a number. He is the husband of his high school sweetheart Colleen Buane, 20. They were married three short months before his death. He was on his first tour of duty and his enlistment was up at the end of year. Those who loved Taylor will never again be the same.

Remember too, in the first 155 days of 2012, 154 active duty U.S. troops took their own lives - an increase of 18% over 2011 – the highest rate since 9/11.

Unfortunately the tragic milestone of 2,000 dead and the skyrocketing suicide rate have gone relatively unnoticed by just about everyone. ...

War News: Take the Iran Pledge of Resistance

Action Alert
On the anniversary of Shock and Awe in Iraq, it's time to stop the next war now

From: United For Peace and Justice, unitedforpeace.org

The Iran Pledge of Resistance (IPOR) is a UFPJ initiated coordinated grassroots campaign to build an emergency response network capable of preempting any escalated U.S. intervention in Iran or the Middle East.

Over the past few months there has been escalating talk about the possibility of a U.S. war with Iran. Israel, the U.S.’s closest ally in the region, is threatening attacks which could pull us into war. President Obama and the Republican presidential candidates are saying that “all options are on the table” to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. This is despite the fact that top U.S. intelligence officials have made consistent statements that Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program nor is there proof they intend to establish one.

Let’s stop this war before it starts.

On Feb 15, 2003 millions of people marched against war in Iraq. What if millions of us again join together to say no to war, but this time organize a mass horizontal direct action network? ...

War News: Bradley Manning to be arraigned at Fort Meade Feb. 23rd

Action Alert
Court martial expected in early May.

By the Bradley Manning Support Network.

The US Army last week scheduled a formal arraignment hearing for PFC Bradley Manning, the accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower. The arraignment is scheduled for 1:00 PM EST, February 23, 2012 at Fort Meade, Maryland, just northeast of Washington DC. While the hearing itself is expected to be brief, PFC Manning is expected to be present, and the proceedings are open to the media and public. Washington DC area supporters of the Support Network are encouraged to attend the arraignment.

Bradley’s show trial will begin in earnest with this arraignment. This proceeding will set the dates for a series of hearings on pre-trial motions likely to occur in March and April. Finally, the arraignment will set the date for the full court-martial—which we currently expect to begin in early May. ...

The U.S.-led campaign to bring about regime change is escalating. The EuropeanUnion announced a complete embargo of Iranian oil. Taken together with the other economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies, this is a campaign meant to impose maximum suffering on the people of Iran by destabilizing and destroying the country’s economy. At the same time, covert action inside the country, including assassinations, sabotage and drone over flights, is intensifying. U.S. military bases surround Iran, while nuclear-armed U.S. aircraft carriers and Trident submarines sit right off its cost. ...

Environment: In the Clearing Stands a Boxer: One Man's Fight Against Fracking

Action Alertby: William Rivers Pitt, Truthout | Op-Ed

There is a natural prejudice against fasting as part of a political struggle. It is considered a vulgar interpolation in politics by the ordinary politician, though it has always been resorted to by prisoners. My fast should not be considered a political move in any sense of the term. It is obedience to the peremptory call of conscience and duty. It comes out of felt agony.
- Mahatma Gandhi, January 1948

What can the "little person" do?

We live in a country dominated by Citizens United, by "super-PAC's," by corporate wealth and power of such vast depth and breadth that to even contemplate a challenge against such powers is paralyzing. They are watching, they are listening, and if you step on the wrong set of toes, as the song goes, "The Man come and take you away."

It is all well and good to be inspired by the words of men like Mario Savio, who said, "There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus and you've got to make it stop!" ...
